Have you heard that when the seasons change, certain products in our natural hair care just don’t seem to work as good as they used to? Don’t throw the product away! It may be a seasonal product. The habitat has a lot to do with how our hair will act.
In the winter months, the cooler and drier air can make the situation even worse. One bit of opinion is to avoid humectants. Humectants contain honey, glycerin, panthenol, hydrolyzed wheat protein, and propylene glycol. It helps to grab moisture from the air and enter the roots of our hair. During winters, it does the exact opposite making everything worse.
TIPS ON PREPARING HAIR FOR WINTER
- It is important to protect those strands (and ends) from the elements. Some styles to protect the hair are buns, braids, twists, ponytails, wigs, or weaves. There are probably more styles than this.
- Believe in Pre-pooing if you haven’t been doing this already. Pre-poo means to moisturize before shampooing. Dryness can be a huge issue, as washing your hair regularly can strip your hair of its natural oils.
- Switch to more deep conditioning or treatments.
- Switch your usual hair gel (if you use one) for moisturizing cream/smoothie/or butter instead. Pantene Oil Replacement or Moroccanoil Treatment are some great options.
- Clean less often as cleaning up too much can have drying effects. Use a mild shampoo like Forest Essential Hair Cleanser or L’Occitane EN Provence Body & Strength Shampoo
In the summer months, there is an inrease in water activities, time spent outside, longer days, and travel. The opportunities to sweat increases with an increase in humidity. It is time to keep off those humectant products, shampoos, and conditioners.
TIPS ON PREPARING HAIR FOR SUMMER
- Check the weather channel for the temperature and humidity. If there is an increase in temperature with humidity you might want to tie your hair into a ponytail. Also rain can make shrinkage and frizz even more obvious.
- Leave the heat alone (if you even use heat at all). Heat styling can be even more damaging in the warmer months because it becomes harder to accomplish straighter hairstyles. The hair is more likely to frizz. You are also more likely to use the flat iron more often or turn the heat up higher.
- Drink water. Staying hydrated not only affects your body and skin, but your hair also.
- If you plan on swimming a lot in chlorinated water, invest in a chelating shampoo and/or conditioner, as it helps get all the chlorine of the hair.
- Wash your hair more. Since your hair is expaned, your strand is more likely to soak up everything, even smells. Avoid using hair gels as it can make your hair more flaky.
